Szombathely Mayor Office of Szombathely
The predecessor of Szombathely was established around A.D. 43 by Claudius emperor by the name of Colonia Claudia Savariensum (Claudius Colony of the Savarias). The town on the Amber Road improved quite fast, probably that is why Savaria became the centre of the civil administration and emperor culture after 106 when Pannónia was didived into two parts. More changes were seen when Christianity spread in the area. Savaria gave two saint people to the Catholic Church: in 303 Saint Quirinus, Bishop of Siscia died a martyr's death (Sisak, Croatia) and Saint Martin who later became Bishop of tours was born here. The historical down town still preserves its shape in its structures from the Middle Ages. The Main Square, formally functioned as the market square, provided space for local weekly fairs and national ones as well for centuries. This is how the town got its name: the fairs of Szombathely were held every Saturday.
