Balatonfüred

Balatonfüred is a little town on the north shore of Lake Balaton with 13.500 residents. Visitors of the town can immediately feel the harmonic mixture of past and present as they arrive in the town. Its history goes back as far as the Roman times, so visitors bump into memories of the past at every step. It really began to flourish in the 19th century. It became popular meeting point of progressive politicians, artists; its historic and cultural role was the most remarkable at the time. The town has several historical buildings, remarkable pieces of architecture built at the time, and traditions derived from the period: the first Anna Ball was held here, in the “Horváth House” in 1825. Its tourism can be traced back to the distance of several centuries; after the acid-water of Füred was pronounced to be medicinal water and medicate spring, it was pronounced to be a health-resort in 1971, and since 1987 it is known as the “International Town of Wine-grape and Wine”. Its publicity is owing to its mediterranean-like climate and its acid medicate springs. Water of its springs are used for medical purposes in the National Sanatorium operating in the town. The National Sanatorium is known as “Heart Sanatorium” by the whole country, as heart therapies have got long history here, it was an internationally acknowledged Sanatorium even one hundred years ago. The environs of the Sanatorium is a preserve health-resort area.
